DHAKA: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 will deliver the verdict on the case filed against Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
Tribunal Deputy Registrar Aurunav Chakrabarti said.Earlier on June 5, a three-member ICT-2 led-by Justice Obaildul Hasan passed the order saying that the tribunal would pronounce the verdict any day as the closing argument of the case was completed.
The ICT-2 completed hearing of the prosecution and the defence in the war crimes case against Mujaheed on June 5 this year.
But the tribunal issued a CAV (curia advisari vult or reserving the judgement until a later time). Now it has decided to award the verdict on Mujaheed on Wednesday. The tribunal chief, Justice Obaidul Hassan, and the two other judges, Justice Md Mujibur Rahman Mia and Judge Shahinur Islam, will be around to award the verdict with Mujahid in the dock.
Like other accused in war crimes cases, Mujaheed, 66, was tried under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act 1973.
Mujaheed faced the trial on seven counts of crimes against humanity, including genocide, murder, torture, conspiracy, planning incitement and complicity in atrocities during the 1971 Liberation War.
On June 29, 2010, Mujaheed was arrested on charges of defying court orders and was shown arrested in the war crimes case on August 2, 2010.He was indicted on June 21, 2012 and his formal trial began on July 19, 2012.
The prosecution began its closing arguments on May 7 and concluded it primarily on May 16 and the defence began its closing arguments on May 22 and concluded on June 4.
Preosecutor Mokhlesur Rahman Badal had hoped to have 34 accusations in the seven charges against Mujahid proved.
The tribunal on Jun 21 indicted the Jamaat leader for allegedly committing crimes against humanity including murder, genocide, rape, arson and loot.
Jamaat-e-Islami has called a nationwide dawn-to-dusk general strike on Wednesday -- the third day in a row -- to protest the verdict due that day against its Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammed Mujaheed, who stands accused of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.On Monday, it had called for a strike to time with the imminent verdict against its former chief Ghulam Azam. On Tuesday, it called a strike to protest against Azam's 'life in prison' verdict.
Now as the ICT-2 is all set to deliver its verdict against Mujahid on Wednesday, the country is bracing for a nationwide strike for the third successive day.Jamaat announced the Wednesday strike in a media statement signed by the party’s Acting Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan.
“The dawn-to-dusk countrywide general strike for Wednesday is called to protest the government conspiracy to punish Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid in a false case,” said Khan in the statement.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 will deliver its verdict on Mujahid two days after ICT-1 sentenced the party's former chief Ghulam Azam to 90 years in jail.
The Jamaat guru was found guilty of all five charges levelled against him but gave him 90 years in prison considering his age and failing health.
Jamaat, the key ally to main opposition BNP, has unleashed considerable violence since Monday to enforce the strikes it has called.
On Tuesday, a driver was badly burnt when Jamaat acivists set a bus on fire and a nine year old child was crushed under a bus trying to escape the assault at Gazipur.
The Jamaat had also enforced similar strikes ahead and during the verdicts on other Jamaat leaders convicted of war crimes -- Delwar Hossain Sayedee, Abdul Qader Molla and Mohammad Kamaruzzaman.17July2013
