The Bangladesh Tariqat Federation on Monday demanded the government outlaw the Jamaat-e-Islami, a party that has been accused of collaborating with the Pakistani Army and opposing the nation’s struggle for freedom in 1971.The party is expected to announce a large-scale programme against the Jamaat-e-Islami soon.
Several leaders of the party visited the Ganabhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister, at around 8pm and held an hour-long meeting with Sheikh Hasina.
Environment and Forest Minister Hasan Mahmud, who was present at the meeting, told bdnews24.com the Federation had assured the Prime Minister that they would stand by her.
“They have also demanded banning the Jamaat,” Mahmud, also the ruling Awami League’s Publication Secretary said.
He said the Tariqat leaders also assured Hasina of tackling all types of anarchy with the help of Islamic scholars.
